Patty Reese performed at McGinty’s in Downtown Silver Spring during Silver Spring Blues Week 2012

Patty Reese is winner of eleven WAMMIES including Album of the Year, Artist of the Year and Roots Rock Vocalist! With the voice and musicianship on Patty Reese’s latest release Strong Medicine, it couldn’t be more clear that the medicine is working.

After a standing ovation following her performance at the packed Strathmore Music Center during the recent Woodstock tribute, Patty Reese’s attitude with soulful expression and her powerhouse pipes proved a match for the likes of Janis Joplin and other prolific and important artists. Other comparisons have been made, that Reese claims as influences, including Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen.

Patty Reese performs more than 250 dates a year, released a WAMMIE award winning album “Here and Now” and has garnered multiple songwriting awards over the years. Her powerhouse vocals, strong work ethic and honed songwriting skills have led her to the release of her best work to date Strong Medicine where between acoustic guitar-accompanied story songs and powerful songs backed by a full band, Patty puts all of her crafts to work. This CD has garnered even more attention and awards (WAMMIES) including Roots Rock Album and Roots Rock Vocalist.

The Xpress was a featured band on Silver Spring's Veterans Plaza for Silver Spring Blues Week 2012!

The Xpress has been together for over two years with a  repertoire that is blues-based and also reaches into jazz and blues-rock.

Our first CD, entitled "Brothers From Other Mothers," will be released this summer. It features twelve original tunes from Harmonica Blu and one cover, Mystery Train. The songs cover a variety of topics -- from lost love to greedy businessmen, from substance abuse to taxation -- and a variety of musical styles from the deep wells of blues and jazz.

Blu has been playing harp for well over 40 years and mines modern and pre-WWII harp styles with big influences from jazz and American "folk" styles. He started out listening to harp players such as Sonny Terry and Doc Ross, and migrated to Little Walter, Paul Butterfield and others. He studied jazz improvisation as a vocalist in the renowned workshops of Barry Harris in New York City, and that greatly affected his playing concept on harp. His vocal influences range from Muddy Waters to Joe Williams of the Count Basie band. He has recently added alto sax to his musical arsenal and usually brings it out for a couple of tunes on our shows.

Dave Myre is a recently retired US Navy Commander whose last post was as an aeronautics professor at Annapolis. Over the years he has studied guitar with several teachers and has played in several bands. He has listened to and studied many of the great players of blues and rock. Although he has terrific "chops" and tone he never overplays, preferring to be tasteful and appropriate to each song. His star turn comes with his amazing guitar and vocal arrangement of All Along the Watchtower as well as on stellar solos on all our songs.

James "Cookie" Cooke has been playing bass for a lifetime, having started at the age of 12. After a career in the US Army he used the GI Bill to study music theory  for two years. He can cover blues, jazz, rock, funk, country, Elvis - you name it! - with a deep rhythmic pocket. Always strong and appropriate, he powers the band like the engines on an ocean liner!

Drummer Randy Pittman has gigged with several rock and blues bands in the Annapolis area.  He has been rock solid on our blues and blues-rock tunes and has grown into a jazz drummer on tunes like Miles Davis' All Blues and on some of Harmonica Blu's originals, such as Only For The Memories. His showpiece on our upcoming CD is probably Mystery Train with its tempo shifts and high-speed railroad journey.

Sheryl Sears & Friends at the Silver Spring Blues Festival 2012

Jonny Grave Kicked Off Silver Spring Blues Week 2012 at Pyramid Atlantic

Jonny Grave is a guitarist, song writer, singer, bandleader, busker, teacher, musical historian, and Bluesman from Washington DC. Growing up in a very musical family, Grave was introduced to the sounds of American traditional folk music early on. At age fifteen he found himself learning slide guitar techniques from old Blues records, and by seventeen he was performing them live.

The distinct sound that Jonny Grave's music conjures is a resurrection of sorts. The music of R. L. Burnside, Mississippi Fred McDowell,Robert Johnson and Bukka White all find a way into Grave's playing style. His repertoire of sound is made up of new arrangements of older Blues tunes, and deeply rooted solid originals.

In 2009, after years of performing as a solo/acoustic act, he formed a band, and took the DC area by storm with an electrified, blues-rock sound. Billed as Jonny Grave and the Tombstones, they have played a steady string of shows at local DC clubs. They maintain a weekly residency at Madam's Organ Blues Bar on Tuesdays upstairs. They are also currently a part of the student band program at Omega Studios, serving as a model band for the students to record.

Staying true to his acoustic roots, though, Grave still performs solo on a regular basis. He has an ongoing residency at Nanny O'Brien's in Cleveland Park of Washington DC. He is an active participant in the local folk community, teaching slide guitar and Blues lessons. He is also the youngest member of the Washington Folk Festival Committee.

Jonny Grave currently has several releases available for sale on iTunes and Amazon.com. The latest, "Live at Ratfeather's" was recorded at Blue House Studios in Kensington, MD. The album includes 9 tracks of all-electric blues, all recorded live in a single room using an extraordinarily minimalist approach. The resulting sound is blues and rock going back to the basics.
